Laura was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. She pursued a career in film and the fashion industry in New York City before going back to school at CUNY – Borough of Manhattan CC, then took the leap to move to California to pursue her dream of attending the University of California, Berkeley. She attended Berkeley City College and Laney College for two years, where she worked as a lab technician, TA, and tutor in the chemistry department under Dr. Siraj Omar and Dr. Samuel Gillette. She transferred to UC Berkeley in her Junior year, Fall 2016, and joined Kevin Wilson’s research group at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, using dynamic light scattering to study the physical properties of organic aerosols. She joined the Maimone lab in the summer of 2017 because she is passionate about using synthetic organic chemistry to solve complex biological problems. When she’s not in the lab you will most likely find her catching an independent film at Alamo Drafthouse, volunteering for women in STEM programs, baking cookies, or enjoying a good glass of bourbon.
