Karl was born and raised outside of Seattle, in the small town of Poulsbo, WA. He originally attended Saint Mary’s College of Maryland to competitively sail on the school’s varsity team, then, transferred to the University of Washington his sophomore year. Karl graduated in the fall of 2014 with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biochemistry. While at the UW, Karl conducted research in Prof. Gojko Lalic’s group where he worked on asymmetric, gold catalyzed and copper, cross-coupling reactions. After college, he spent several months working in the research group at Seattle Genetics and fly-fishing. When he isn’t in lab, Karl enjoys backpacking, fishing, rock-climbing, sailing, and every stereotypical pacific-northwest outdoor activity.
