Yingda was born in Beijing, China in 1983. He received his B.E. degree in Computer Science from Beijing University of Technology in 2006. He then studied computer-aided drug design and pharmaceutical chemistry and obtained his M.S. at Tianjin University with Professor Kang Zhao in 2008. Yingda obtained his Ph.D. at the Univeristy of Michigan with Professor Melanie Sanford in 2013, where he worked on arene trifluoromethylation, after which he traveled to Berkeley to join the Sarpong group.
