Rebecca "Becca Becca Becca" Johnson was born and raised in Over-Andover, Massachusetts. She wanted to be a veterinarian until she took Organic Chemistry in undergrad, and she only switched because she thought it was great how you could synthesize molecules that looked like animals. Horses were (and still are) a special passion of hers, and just as a horse loves a sugar cube, Becca loved studying nitrenoid mediated synthesis of amino sugars with Christian Rojas at Barnard College in New York. Becca decided to come to UC Berkeley for three reasons: the warm weather, the chemistry, and the warm weather. Unfortunately she realized too late that Berkeley weather never gets above 80˚ F, so she always wears a coat anyway.
