Ben was born in Bern, the capital city of Switzerland. He obtained his Masters degree in chemistry from the University of Bern under the supervision of Prof. Philippe Renaud investigating a carboazidation-intramolcular Schmidt reaction sequence to build-up bicyclic amines. Before starting his PhD studies in the same group, Ben took an internship as a medicinal chemist for Novartis (NIBR) in Basel, Switzerland. During his doctoral studies he worked on radical cyclization cascade reactions involving organic azides as radical traps. Since March 2016, Ben has been a member of the Sarpong group as a postdoctoral scholar with a fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF, Early Postdoc.Mobility) working on the total synthesis of taxoid natural products.
