Ethan's chemical education began in 2002 while studying at the University of Pennsylvania. He worked in the labs of both Prof. Jeffery Winkler and Prof. Patrick Walsh crafting skills in both total synthesis and methods development. Upon graduating in 2006, he matriculated at Columbia University and pursued his Ph.D. research under the guidance of Prof. Tristan Lambert. The majority of his dissertation work focused on developing the utility of aromatic ions as promoters and catalysts for organic transformations. The remainder being spent on studies toward the total synthesis of platensimycin. In 2011, Ethan moved cross country and joined the Sarpong group. He is currently targeting the synthesis of complex alkaloids and also developing metallocarbene-based reactions.
