Here are some listings for current staff and post-doctoral positions in the Mathies Lab.

If you feel that you've got something to offer, please get in touch with us. We're always looking for talented, motivated, and creative researchers from many disciplines.

We are looking for post-docs to work on the following project:

DOE Sponsored Helios Project on Alternative Energy Conversion Methods
Joint project with Profs. Alex Bell and Richard Mathies
Departments of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
University of California at Berkeley and LBNL

The objective of this subproject on Surface-Enhanced Raman Studies of Electrochemical Systems is to understand the surface species and elementary processes involved in the electrolysis of water and the electrolytic reduction of CO2 in water to synthesis gas (a mixture of CO and H2).  We will investigate both metals and organometallic complexes as electrocatalysts.  Structural identification of adsorbed species present on the catalyst as a function of time and position will be carried out by surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) and SERS microscopy.  A small electrochemical cell will be designed with windows so that either the cathode or the anode of the cell can be observed by SERS.  The surface coverage by species such as –OH, OOH, HCO2, CO will be recorded as a function of cell potential.  The ultimate goal of the project is to identify how electrocatalyst composition is related to the kinetics of the elementary processes that limit the rates of the overall electrolytic process.  Expertise in the design and set up of optical systems for Raman spectroscopy is required, expertise in SERS would be highly desirable, but prior experience in electrochemistry is not essential.
