UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY

POLICY FOR OFF-HOURS UNDERGRADUATE ACCESS TO CHEMISTRY LIBRARY

Only (A) undergraduates currently enrolled in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering 190 series research courses or (B) students who are doing research with a College of Chemistry faculty member and whose research directors request such access are allowed the privilege of using the Library when it is locked.

To obtain access authorization, students enrolled in 190 series courses must obtain the signature of the Chemistry librarian and students doing research with a College faculty member must obtain his or her signature.

Continued access to the Library is contingent upon maintaining the above eligibility and adherence to the rules listed in this document and posted in the library. Authorization is good for one semester or summer session and automatically terminates after final exams. The signature of the librarian or the research director must be acquired to renew authorization.

RULES GOVERNING USE OF CHEMISTRY LIBRARY

Guests are not to be brought into the library.

No food or drink is allowed at any time.

The entry door is not to be propped open; an alarm will sound.

Use of the library is reserved for quiet study and research.

Off-hours users of the facility should be prepared to show University security personnel their College of Chemistry I.D. card if requested to do so.

Students enrolled in 190 courses will not receive credit for the course until the I.D. card and any keys issued are returned.

The College of Chemistry policy on keys and I.D. cards, as outlined below, must be followed:

a. Keys are not to be labeled with the room/building which they unlock. Keys are coded in such a way that should a key be lost, the finder will not know what it will open.

b. Keys or I.D. cards, including non-photo computer room access cards, are not to be used by anyone other than the individual to whom they were issued. The College security guard has been instructed to confiscate any College I.D. or keys that do not belong to the person using them.

c. It is unlawful to duplicate any University key. (Per the Campus "Access Control Policy, November 1, 1991 Revision": "Any person who knowingly makes, duplicates, causes to be duplicated, or uses or attempts to make, duplicate, cause to be duplicated, used, or has in his possession any key to a building or other area owned, operated, or controlled by the State of California...or any state agency... without authorization from the person in charge of such building or area or [his/her] designated representative, and with knowledge of the lack of such authorization is guilty of a misdemeanor." California Penal Code Section 469)

d. Should any key or I.D. card be lost, the loss must be immediately reported to the College Building Manager or her representative in 410 Latimer, 2-5231. Failure to do so may result in a charge for any required rekeying of College facilities.

e. Keys and I.D. cards are to be returned to the College prior to leaving the College or terminating the relationship for which the key and/or card was issued.

Undergraduates are required to leave a deposit of $5 per key and I.D. card. This deposit must be in cash and will be refunded when the key(s) and I.D. card are returned to the College.

The College of Chemistry security guard, the UCPD, and Library staff have been instructed to evict any individual from this facility who does not adhere to the above regulations as well as to require them to surrender their College of Chemistry I.D. card and keys.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

For any emergency, the Campus Emergency Response Plan must be activated by pulling the nearest fire alarm (in case of fire) or calling the Campus police at 9-911 from any Campus phone. For more detailed information on emergency response, refer to the College of Chemistry "Emergency Response Guide" located next to all hall phones and emergency phones in the College. An emergency phone is located just outside the entrance to the Library next to the elevator. The Emergency Response Plan can also be activated by dialing 911 from any pay phone (coins are not required). External pay phones are located immediately outside Latimer Hall on the north side of the building at the Plaza (first floor) level.

An emergency alert is signaled by a steady bell, siren, horn, or buzzer. Upon such an emergency alert, follow posted directions and evacuate the building as soon as possible.
