POLICY FOR ACCESS TO BIXBY STUDY COMMONS

This facility has been designed for the use of students who are declared Chemistry or Chemical Engineering majors. Only these individuals have the privilege of access when the facility is locked. It is the responsibility of authorized persons to ensure that any guest they bring to the facility adheres to the policy governing its use as stated in this document and posted in the facility.

RULES GOVERNING USE OF BIXBY STUDY COMMONS

Food is allowed in this facility; however, any debris or spillage is to be picked up or cleaned by the individual creating it.

The entry door is not to be propped open.

Sleeping is not allowed in this facility.

Off-hours users of the facility should be prepared to show University security personnel their University photo I.D. and their key to this facility upon request.

The College of Chemistry policy on keys, as outlined below, must be followed:

a. Keys are not to be labeled with the room/building which they unlock. Keys are coded in such a way that should a key be lost, the finder will not know what it will open.

b. Keys or I.D. cards are not to be used by anyone other than the individual to whom they were issued. The College security guard has been instructed to confiscate any College I.D. or keys that do not belong to the person using them.

c. It is unlawful to duplicate any University key. (Per the Campus "Access Control Policy, November 1, 1991 Revision": "Any person who knowingly makes, duplicates, causes to be duplicated, or uses or attempts to make, duplicate, cause to be duplicated, used, or has in his possession any key to a building or other area owned, operated, or controlled by the State of California...or any state agency... without authorization from the person in charge of such building or area or [his/her] designated representative, and with knowledge of the lack of such authorization is guilty of a misdemeanor." California Penal Code Section 469)

d. Should any key or I.D. card be lost, the loss must be immediately reported to the College Building Manager or her representative in 410 Latimer, 2-5231. Failure to do so may result in a charge for any required rekeying of College facilities.

e. Keys are to be returned to the College prior to leaving the College or terminating the relationship for which the key was issued.

Undergraduates are required to leave a deposit of $5 per key. This deposit must be in cash and will be refunded when the key is returned to the College.

The College of Chemistry security guard and the UCPD have been instructed to evict any individual from this facility who does not adhere to the above regulations as well as to require them to surrender their Bixby Study Commons key.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

For any emergency, the Campus Emergency Response Plan must be activated by pulling the nearest fire alarm (in case of fire) or calling the Campus police at 9-911 from any Campus phone. For more detailed information on emergency response, refer to the College of Chemistry "Emergency Response Guide" located next to all hall phones and emergency phones in the College. An emergency phone is located just inside the entrance to the Bixby Study Commons. The Emergency Response Plan can also be activated by dialing 911 from any pay phone (coins are not required). External pay phones are located immediately outside Latimer Hall on the north side of the building, Plaza (first floor) level.

An emergency alert is signaled by a steady bell, siren, horn, or buzzer. Upon such an emergency alert, follow posted directions and evacuate the building as soon as possible.
