c/o Alivisatos Lab, Hildebrand D83
UC Berkeley Chemistry Department #1460
Berkeley, CA 94720-1460
Berkeley campus maps are available here. We are in Quadrant B on the far right, about halfway up. Alivisatos Lab is located in Hildebrand Hall, D level (lower level).
Parking is very limited on and around the UC-Berkeley campus -- it is better to take BART to the downtown Berkeley station if possible.
If you are driving, the closest public parking garage to Prof. Alivistos' lab is the Stadium Parking Garage at 2175 Gayley Road. If you are coming by Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART), get off at the downtown Berkeley BART Station. Then walk on Addison uphill towards the campus and continue straight into the campus until you get to Hildebrand Hall. It is about a half mile walk to our building. The Sather Tower Campanile is a good landmark, it's a tall tower and is a few buildings before you get to Hildebrand Hall. Hildebrand Hall is on the east end of campus (the side towards the hills).
There are also UC Berkeley Bear Transit buses ($1) that run frequently. They stop on Shattuck at Addison. Shattuck is a split street, there are two one way streets with the same name, with a small block in between. The stop you want is on the side of Shattuck going down towards University. You will want to get off at either the Hearst Mining Circle stop or the Gayley @ Station Rimway stop. Ask the driver to be sure that the bus you are on will stop at one of these. There are several lines, and you can view a bus map here.
To get to Paul Alivisatos' lab and office in the Hildebrand building: Start from the breezeway of Hildebrand (the outdoors area between the two buildings, it is outdoors but there is a building overhead), then walk towards the double staircase at the end. Half-way through the breezeway on your left you will see a lobby with a glass front labeled "Hildebrand Hall" and glass double doors. That is the entrance to our area of the building. Take the elevator or stairs down to D level. D43A is by the elevator doors, and is the entrance to Paul Alivisatos' office and his group's administrative office. The postdocs and students have desks in D83 and D45, with our research labs on the same level.
If you are coming to our lab on a weekend or after hours, the building may be locked. In that case you should come to the building entrance, or as far as you can gain access and then call 510-642-2148 or Paul's number if you are meeting in his office. You may need to try both numbers to reach someone on the weekend. The group's program manager, Negest Williams, can be reached by phone at 510-643-2050, Paul Alivisatos is at 643-7311, and the phone for D83 is 642-2148. Student offices in D45 are at 643-4078.
Navigating the Berkeley Area and in particular the campus area can be difficult. If the directions listed here are unclear of if you need further directions, please feel free to contact us by phone.
