Glove Box

Start-up

1. Connect Argon, Argon/Hydrogen mixture, and vent lines to glove box. Outlet pressure from the regulators should be 35 psig.

2. Connect all electrical cords. Ensure that the vacuum pump is plugged into the outlet connected to the glove box base (labeled 110V), and that the outlet is connected to the surge protector.

3. Turn on the monitor, and then turn the back relay switch and the front power button on. Press escape to go to normal mode. Turn on the pump. If the pump does not work, turn off the back relay switch, and then turn off the pump, monitor and system power. After waiting a couple of seconds, turn the monitor and back relay switch on again, then the front power and press escape. The pump should now be working.

4. Open the valve on the Argon line so that it can enter the glove box. Purge the box by slowly opening the top vent and setting the low pressure to 1" water. There should be positive pressure and the gloves should not be sucked in. While purging make sure that the Argon regulator does not freeze. If it does, stop the purge by closing the top vent. The box will pressurize above the low pressure limit and then automatically close the solenoid valve. Heat the regulator using a heat gun to thaw out the regulator.

5. Once the moisture analyzer reading is ~500 ppm, the oxygen analyzer can be turned on. Turn on both switches and open the flow meter and shut off valve. Then calibrate the oxygen analyzer per manual procedure (p. 24), the level should be 8.4.

6. Continue purging the box as before until the oxygen level is between 100-200 ppm. Stop purging the box by closing the purge valve. Open the valve for the catalyst chamber, and turn the blower on to 50%.

7. If necessary, regenerate the catalyst.

Glove Box Shutdown Procedure

Shut off power and pump switches on oxygen analyzer.
1. Close flow meter and shut down valve on oxygen analyzer.
2. Turn blower speed all of the way down.
3. Close both catalyst valves.
4. Turn off back relay switch.
5. Turn off front power switch.
6. Close gas valves at source.

Additional considerations:
• Filters were removed
• Holes for filters were covered with paper.
• Pump was unplugged from 110V plug
• All connections were undone
• Pump was removed
• Gloves were removed and put in a plastic bag
• Probe for oxygen analyzer was removed and put in a plastic bag. That bag was then put in another plastic bag with dry-right.
• Oxygen calibration mode setting was 8.4
• Normal oxygen reading is around 1 ppm
