INTRODUCTION

This website gives an introduction to research that chemical engineers actually perform. Our general research area is energy, and more specifically we will be talking about the three way catalytic converters (TWCs) that are used in all vehicles today.

The different sections of this website will first introduce background material on catalytic converters and relevant topics in kinetics. Afterward, this knowledge will guide us to understand a paper published on TWCs so we can see an example of how these concepts are put into action.

The research paper of interest is titled Sensitivity Analysis and Kinetic Parameter Estimation in a Three Way Catalytic Converter by Koteswara Rao, S.; Imam, R.; Ramanathan, K. and Pushpavanam (Ind. Eng. Chem. Res., Vol. 48, No. 8, 2009, pp. 3779-3790). Their objective was to develop and implement an optimization algorithm that uses transient vehicle test experimental data to tune kinetic (reaction) parameters.

This website was compiled as part of a final project for a graduate level Kinetics and Reactor Design course at UC Berkeley. Details are given below.
