Issues:

QE

• Paper shortened: was originally supposed to be like a publication manuscript, but there was trouble with readability
• New version: give committee an idea in a succinct form what is to be presented at the exam
• Slide limit: students were reluctant to go to the blackboard to answer questions - students had a slide for every question

Graduate Student Life fund

• Have a fund number - an entire chart string
• Created as a berkeley foundation fund - once people give, the regents pay out quarterly or so to actual account. (a regents fund is a bit faster, but would not be online)
• Checks could be given directly to Rocio or College (pay to: cheme student life) and would be processed faster

Objectives of the PhD degree

• Does it have goals towards faculty positions or other types of training?
• Can go to their adviser or to Rocio to talk about opportunities
• Department is more focused on the phd degree because of diversity of goals of students
• How to get teaching or grant writing experience to students?
• In bulletin there is discussion of degrees

Graduate Women in the Department

• There is now a mailing list set up
• A lunch is set up for next week
