Issues:
Decided on Money allocation for GSAC events
- Money for softball and prelims are for sure
- Other events will be more flexible
GSI policy
- Current fellowship students want to be able to GSI twice and at a reasonable time
- Other students were concerned about pay differentials as well as GSI requirements
- Current policy is fairly complicated - new or current students may not know what to expect
- Small fellowships have no incentive - no bonus
- New alternative: all students receive GSI bonus during their teaching semesters
- Is a non-start: puts strain on research budgets
- Tuition/fees going up so much, some faculty see post-docs as cheaper (getting really expensive to have a grad-student - only productive for a couple years)
- Faculty would have to pay 50% overhead of an additional 16600
- Also tough when giving offer letters: what is the base pay?
- Graduate students are not allowed to hold positions over 50% (Graduate Division rules)
- Most students are holding a ~45% GSR position in a semester
- Proposed policy had prioritized goals because there are many "special cases"
- Department is willing to work with fellowship students who are willing to defer their fellowships in order to get a GSI spot (teaching experience)
- Possibility of also using 25% appointments for GSI's - this is a good alternative to have
