Location: 424 Sproul Hall
Purpose of Meeting:

The UAW will present their case to Labor Relations (LR) concerning the payment of GSI's on fellowship.

Below is an outline of the meeting as best Will can remember it:

Michael: The UAW was contacted about GSI pay by email in June and became aware of the discrepancy. He presented a list of 28 students he knew were affected by the current policy with the pay each student received while teaching ~$91/mos. The list included affected parties back to 2003, and he would like information regarding the period of time the policy has been in place and the payment for all affected students. The UAW has requested back pay for all affected parties and a change to the policy.

Daraka: The UAW does look at pay information but only to check on pay for past grievances. The union represents too many students to find irregularities with pay, especially since students can have various appointment times. Also, the pay information does not always include percent appointment, so the UAW can only know about problems when contacted by student, so the timeline should not apply in this case and all students previously affected should be paid.

Michael: Also, other departments on campus pay their GSI's on fellowship.

Deborah: Wants the UAW to give her a list of all the affected parties and more information about each one.

Daraka: Presented a copy of the waiver form for ChE GSI's which states that the student understands that their salary will come from other sources in lieu of general funds. The UAW would like the wording on the form changed because funding is always from various sources. He then presented an email showing that students on fellowship were appointed to 50% GSI positions, but did not receive pay at 50%.

Deborah: Thanked Michael for time, and asked students if they had anything to add.

Diane: What solution would you suggest?

Will: We don't know enough to make a suggestion.

Students: We haven't really discussed it.

Daraka: The UAW's solution is listed in the grievance filing.

Deborah: We will need a few days to research the issue and come up with a response.

Meeting adjourned.
