GSL Relocation Meeting April 30, 2009

Attendance: Will Vining, Sarah Huffer, Dana Nadler, Jordan RoseFigura, Pete Mustonen, Ina Massen, Richard Mathies, Doug Clark, Alexei Anderson
Location: 403 Latimer

Topic: GSL relocation

Reason: The College of Chemistry (CofC) is undergoing a major renovation project. An article about these changes appeared in the berkeleyan. The CofC wants to renovate the undergraduate chemistry labs. In order to do this, they must reduce the lab time by moving the lab recitation to another room. This extra room will come from renovating the Bixby Commons and converting it into two rooms, instead of 3, and making them suitable for class, office hours, or group meetings.

In addition to renovating the Bixby Commons, the mezzanine level of the library will also be renovated to create extra meeting space (3 rooms) and all of the journals will be moved to off-site storage. These renovations will fulfill the longterm vision of the college, which is to have all undergraduate services on the plaza level, and create extra meeting space. Eventually, the undergraduate advising services will be moved to the first floor of Gilman Hall from the 4th floor of Latimer.

Result: The chemical engineering and chemistry GSL's will be combined into a single room in 321 Gilman. A pool table will be placed there in addition to the current furniture in the GSLs. This will be a temporary (~4-5 yrs) for the lounge until the undergraduate advising services are moved to the first floor of Gilman and the Chemistry lounge is moved to the 4th floor of Latimer. Concerns: Chemistry: No storage for supplies for ChemKeg. Result: Both Chemistry and ChemE will have locked storage on the 2nd floor of Gilman to replace the lost storage. ChemE: Chemistry grad students would take over the lounge and cheme's would have no place to go.

Result: After discussion, the chemistry students did not feel the lounge would be heavily populated because of it's location in Gilman, away from most chemistry labs. ChemE: No place for recruiting new grad students.

Result: The Bixby Common rooms would be available for recruiting, but they would need to be reserved with Carol in the 4th floor of Latimer.

Timeline: The new GSL will be available before construction begins in Bixby Commons, which is scheduled to begin in the beginning of June. College facilities will move all of the furniture to the new GSL from the old one before construction begins and Ina will notify us of the date when it gets closer.

Perks: As a result of the move, the college will be providing us with a pool table and possibly a ping pong table (both are old) and we'll have enough refrigerated space for 3-4 kegs, since kegs cannot be stored in cold rooms.
