Science and Society Speaker Series

The series is supposed to provide a broader view of research in science and engineering and is sponsored by the Graduate Assembly.

Our first speaker on March 17th is Prof. Robert McGinn from Stanford. He serves as Associate Director for the Suppes Center for the Interdisciplinary Study of Science and Technology and has written two books: Science, Technology, and Society (1991) and Navigating Rough Waters: Ethical Issues in the Water Industry (2001; co-edited and -written with Cheryl Davis). His talk will be titled: "Ethical Responsibilities of Engineering Researchers: Foundations, Cases, and Lessons."

Our second speaker on April 21st is Prof. Londa Schiebinger also from Stanford. She is the John L. Hinds Professor of History of Science and has researched the history of women's participation in science; the structure of scientific institutions; and the gendering of human knowledge. This talk will be co-sponsored with the Graduate Women in Engineering and her talk will be entitled: "Gendered Innovations in Engineering."

The final speaker will be Prof. John Prausnitz from the department of Chemical Engineering here at Berkeley on April 28th. His talk is titled "The Social and Human Dimensions of Chemical Engineering."
