Citric Acid and Sodium Bicarbonate Endothermic Reaction
Materials
- 19.2 grams Citric Acid Anhydrous (22°C)
- 25.2 grams Sodium Bicarbonate (22°C)
- 30 mL cold H2O (11°C)
- 0.25 mL 0.1% Triton X-100 (22°C)
- 1 - Digital Thermometer
- 1 - 400 mL Beaker
- 1 - Spatula
Procedure
For better results, cool all starting materials in ice.
- Measure out 19.2 grams Citric Acid Anhydrous into one 40mL beaker.
- Measure out 25.2 grams Sodium Bicarbonate into a second 40mL beaker.
- Measure out 30mL of cold H2O into a third 40mL beaker.
- Place thermometer probe in 400mL beaker.
- Combine Citric Acid Anhydrous, Sodium Bicarbonate, and H2O into 400mL beaker.
- Stir contents frequently. Watch temperature change.
Results
Reaction Temperature reaches -4.5°C in approximately four minutes.
