The Center
for New Directions in Organic Synthesis was created to capitalize
on the expertise and vision of the research groups in organic chemistry
at the University of California at Berkeley. The faculty members of
the Center recognized that their impact could be significantly enhanced
with an organizational structure that facilitates interactions and
continuing education among their groups and with industrial laboratories.
The center's goals are immediate as well as long tem, but its overarching
purpose is to enhance graduate training. The Center will provide new
opportunities for education and research through exchange between
industry and academe on a continuing basis.
The
Chemistry Department at Berkeley has long enjoyed the corporate support
of industry and hopes to strengthen these relationships for the benefit
of both partners. Such relationships must necessarily evolve with
time, and the faculty involved in the Center will look to its industrial
members to help them refine the programs.
