Research Summary:

My project is concerned with investigating contact lens dynamics and the mixing that occurs in the post lens tear film (PLTF). The ultimate goal of my project is to use the information obtained regarding tear film mixing in order to design an improved contact lens that can be worn for long periods of time without complications. I am beginning my investigation of the post lens tear film by creating an experimental set-up to test the "Dispersive Mixing Model" proposed by Jeff Creech in his thesis titled "Study of the Aqueous Tear Film and Implications for Contact-Lens Wear". The model is used to predict t95, which is the characteristic time for diffusion in the PLTF. There is strong disagreement between the clinical measurement of t95 and the values predicted by the model. However, a significant amount of error is associated with the clinical data since it involves performing tests on human subjects. Therefore, having an experimental set-up to investigate the model will aid in determining its validity.
