Required Materials:

1)    Textbook: Chemistry: The Molecular Science, 3rd Edition; Moore, Stanitski, Jurs.
2)    OWL online homework
3)    i-Clicker transmitter
4)    Laboratory Manual (ISBN: 978-0-7380-2403-5)
5)    Discussion Manual
6)    Carbon copy laboratory notebook
7)    TI-30X IIS Calculator (or similar simple calculator)

All items, except the discussion manual, are available for purchase at the ASUC Bookstore.  The discussion manual is available only at Ned's Bookstore (2476 Bancroft Way).

You have various options for the purchase of the textbook and online homework access - these options are listed below:
1) The ASUC bookstore has the textbook and OWL registration bundled together for $199.50.
2) You can purchase the OWL registration alone from the ASUC bookstore for $115.75.  OWL access also allows you to have access to an online version of the textbook so you do not need the textbook unless you prefer not to read online material.
3) You can purchase a copy of the 2nd edition of the book from an outside source.  If you do this, you will still need to purchase an OWL access card.  All homework assignments will be online through the OWL system, so an older edition of the textbook should not affect your success in the course.

iClicker Registration:

The iClicker can be purchased directly from the ASUC bookstore.  Alternatively, you can purchase one from students that took Chem1A in the Spring 2007 semester - used clickers are not available for purchase from the ASUC bookstore.

Once you purchase an iClicker you will need to register it on the iClicker website: www.iclicker.com.  Click on the "Register" link on the left side of the page.  You will need to enter your name, student ID, and clicker ID (which can be found on the back of your iClicker).  Please make sure that you use the correct student ID and clicker ID numbers when you register your iClicker - if you enter these incorrectly you will not receive credit for your iClicker responses.

Pre-Class Quizzes
Each lecture will begin with a pre-class quiz which will require you to investigate some chemical principle (or data) prior to coming to class.  You will receive points for answering these quizzes correctly.  The first week of pre-class quiz assignments will be posted here next week.  Please complete the first assignment before attending your first lecture!

FAQs

Q:    Can I buy the second edition of the book?
A:    You can buy an older edition of the book, but be aware that some of the homework assignments may not match.  You will need to purchase the OWL/eBook access card in order to do the homework even if you purchase an older edition of the textbook.

Q:    What does the OWL access card do?
A:    The OWL access card will give you access to an online version of the textbook as well as allow you to do the online homework that is required for the course.

Q:    Does the OWL access card provide access to the iClicker system?
A:    No, you will need to purchase each of these separately.

Q:    Can a standard, lined paper notebook be used for the lab notebook?
A:    No, we require a notebook that includes carbon copies.  The brand of carbon copy notebook that you use is completely up to you though

Q:    Can a graphing calculator such as a TI-84 be used as a substitute for the required calculator?
A:    Graphing calculators are not for use during exams in this course because it is too easy to store information in them.
