Berkeley, the top-rated chemistry department in the country, is home to an unusual combination of faculty whose research is at the forefront of analytical chemistry and biotechnology. Their interests span the traditional disciplines of analytical, physical, inorganic, and bioorganic chemistry. The Center for Analytical Biotechnology (CAB) enhances technology development by promoting cross-disciplinary approaches and collaborations directed toward solving key problems in biology and medicine. The Center also brings under one umbrella the students in many different groups working in allied areas. This fosters increased interactions among groups, thereby improving both undergraduate and graduate student education and research. The Center also provides a mechanism for more direct collaborative research among faculty involving common instrumentation and goals. In addition, the Center serves as a vehicle for communication of modern research accomplishments to industrial sponsors and for sponsors to communicate important problem areas. Through funding, sponsors may encourage more rapid developments in areas of their interest |
