Membership in the Center for Analytical Biotechnology

Industrial members of the CAB will find the following benefits to their research activities:

Enhanced Research Progress: By providing funding, a sponsor can encourage research in an area or areas of direct interest to the sponsor. This funding may be provided as a gift to the Center to support research in a general area or as sponsored research for a more specific project and investigator.

Up to date information on new technologies: The Center provides on a regular basis a convenient summary of new technologies, methods, reagents, etc. developed by Center personnel that are or might be available for licensing or patenting.

Short Courses: The Center plans to offer short courses of two or three day duration with the frequency determined by demand. These courses offer our industrial members the opportunity to send their scientists to campus for the purpose of maintaining current awareness of key developments in new fields. These courses will cover the following topics:
1. Mass Spectrometry (Williams)
2. Microfabricated Analysis Systems (Mathies)
3. Chemical Sensors (Majda)
4. Nano Chemistry (Alivisatos)
5. Bioanalytical NMR and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Pines)

CAB Seminars: The Center seminar series bring to Berkeley leading researchers in analytical chemistry and biotechnology. These seminars are open to all industrial members and are widely advertised.

Student Internships: The Center serves as a vehicle for undergraduate students to seek out opportunities to spend the summer as interns in the research laboratories of one of our corporate members. The goal of the internships is to broaden the experience of CAB students and provide recruiting advantages to our corporate members.

Industrial Sabbaticals: Berkeley faculty members of the Center will accept qualified scientists from corporate affiliates for two- to six-month sabbatical leave periods in their laboratories as space permits. Although the visitors may elect to do actual laboratory research, there is no requirement that they do so. Rather, they may use the time to audit classes, attend seminars, and carry out library research. While in residence, visitors will be given the title of "Visiting Industrial Scholar, University of California, Berkeley."

Roster of Students and Postdoctoral Fellows: Corporate members will be provided each summer with a roster of students associated with the Center and the titles of their research projects, and they will have the opportunity to get to know and follow the development of these students and postdocs. The goal is to enhance industrial-academe ties and provide corporate members with a recruiting advantage.
