Activities of the Center for Analytical Biotechnology

Seminar Series: The Center brings in speakers from both industry and academe to give seminars on state-of-the-art developments in analytical chemistry, biotechnology and chemical/biochemical analysis. The seminars are presented by a combination of internal and external speakers and are held monthly. These seminars are widely advertised with the goal of attracting an audience from both industry and other disciplines at Berkeley.

Internal Collaborations: The Center brings together groups with diverse research interests and backgrounds with the goal of stimulating new collaborations that will more effectively solve key biotechnology problems. Such collaborations lead to new solutions to important problems and significantly broaden the training and education of students both at the undergraduate and graduate level through:
* joint projects and supervision of students
* joint research meetings
* annual retreats

Industrial Collaborations: The Center provides a formal mechanism for groups in both academe and industry to interact, share ideas, and learn from one another. This also improves both undergraduate and graduate education by providing students an opportunity to interact with scientists from industry both on campus and in industrial laboratories via internship programs. Such interactions help assure that Berkeley students are educated in areas vital to future industrial needs. Specific activities include:
* symposia and short courses
* a visiting industrial scientist program
* an undergraduate student internship program

Graduate and Undergraduate Education: Bioanalytical chemistry and biotechnology are growing areas of interest at Berkeley. The Center provides a focus for the following activities for improvement of education in these areas:
* new classes at both the undergraduate and graduate level that cover state-of-the-art techniques in biotechnology and chemical analysis
* internships with industrial partners
* interactions with industrial scientists
* participation in seminars

Recruiting: The Center provides a focus for attracting and retaining the most highly qualified graduate students and faculty in bioanalytical chemistry and biotechnology.
