Arup K. Chakraborty
attended the Indian Institute of Technology in Kanpur, India, where
he received the Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering in
1983. He earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University
of Delaware in 1988. After a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the
University of Minnesota, he joined the faculty of the Department of
Chemical Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley. In
1997, he was added to the faculty of the Department of Chemistry.
He is currently Warren and Katherine Schlinger Distinguished
Professor, Chair of Chemical Engineering, and Professor of
Chemistry.
Professor Chakraborty is interested in problems ranging from
inter-cellular communication in the immune system, bio-sensors,
polymer science and interfacial phenomena to zeolite catalysis. He
is primarily concerned with developing quantum and statistical
mechanical descriptions to elucidate pertinent issues in these
areas. He has coauthored over 90 refereed publications, and has
delivered more than 100 invited lectures. His research has been
recognized with a variety of awards. These include the Allan P.
Colbun Award given by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE),
the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, the National Young
Investigator Award, a Miller Research Professorship, Robert W.
Vaughn Lectureship at Caltech, Allan P. Colburn Lectureship at
University of Delaware, an ICI Fellowship of the Royal Academy of
Engineering (U.K.), Election to
National Academy of Engineering, and a Shell Young Faculty Professorship. His
teaching efforts were recognized in 1997 by the U.C. Berkeley
student chapter of the AIChE with the Appreciation of Distinguished
Teaching Award.
Professor Chakraborty is an avid student of the history of science
and engineering. He also enjoys playing squash, watching the San
Francisco 49'ers play professional football, and listening to
classical music.
